July is Graves' Disease Awareness Month: Understanding the Most Common Cause of Hyperthyroidism

Every July, we recognize Graves' Disease Awareness Month—an opportunity to increase understanding of a condition that affects millions of people worldwide yet is often misunderstood or misdiagnosed.

As an endocrinologist, I frequently meet patients who have spent months—or even years—searching for answers before receiving the correct diagnosis. Many have been told their symptoms were due to anxiety, stress, or simply "getting older." While stress can certainly influence how we feel, Graves' disease is an autoimmune condition that deserves prompt recognition and appropriate treatment.

The good news? With early diagnosis and a personalized treatment plan, most people can successfully manage Graves' disease and regain their health.


What Is Graves' Disease?

Graves' disease is an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system mistakenly produces antibodies that stimulate the thyroid gland to produce excessive amounts of thyroid hormone. This results in hyperthyroidism, a state in which the body's metabolism becomes accelerated.

Thyroid hormones regulate nearly every cell in the body, so when levels become too high, the effects can be widespread.


Common Symptoms

Although every patient is different, Graves' disease may cause:

  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat

  • Anxiety, nervousness, or irritability

  • Tremor

  • Heat intolerance and excessive sweating

  • Unintentional weight loss despite a normal or increased appetite

  • Fatigue and muscle weakness

  • Difficulty sleeping

  • Frequent bowel movements

  • Menstrual irregularities

  • Hair thinning

  • Enlarged thyroid (goiter)

Some patients also develop Graves' eye disease (thyroid eye disease), which may cause eye irritation, dryness, redness, light sensitivity, double vision, or a sensation that the eyes appear more prominent.


How Is Graves' Disease Diagnosed?

An accurate diagnosis begins with a thorough medical history and physical examination, followed by appropriate laboratory testing.

Evaluation typically includes:

  • TSH

  • Free T4

  • Free T3

  • Thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulin (TSI) and/or TSH receptor antibodies (TRAb)

High-resolution thyroid ultrasound can also provide valuable information about the thyroid gland and often helps support the diagnosis while evaluating thyroid anatomy.

At our practice, we focus on combining laboratory results with the patient's symptoms, physical examination, and imaging findings. Thyroid disease should never be diagnosed—or managed—based on a single laboratory value alone.


Treatment Is Not One-Size-Fits-All

Many people are surprised to learn that treatment options extend beyond simply eliminating the thyroid gland.

The primary goals of treatment are to control excess thyroid hormone production, reduce symptoms, and address the underlying autoimmune process whenever possible.

Depending on the individual patient, treatment may include:

  • Antithyroid medications such as methimazole

  • Medications to temporarily control symptoms such as rapid heart rate

  • Careful monitoring of thyroid hormone levels

  • Nutritional optimization and correction of vitamin or mineral deficiencies

  • Anti-inflammatory dietary strategies

  • Stress management and lifestyle interventions

  • Selected evidence-informed supplements or botanical therapies in appropriate patients

While radioactive iodine therapy and surgery remain important treatment options for certain situations, they are not the best choice for every patient. A personalized discussion of risks, benefits, and long-term goals is essential.


Don't Forget the Immune System

Graves' disease is fundamentally an autoimmune condition—not simply a thyroid problem.

For this reason, I believe it is important to look beyond thyroid hormone levels alone. Factors such as chronic inflammation, sleep quality, nutrition, environmental exposures, stress, gut health, and overall metabolic health may all influence immune function and should be considered as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.

An integrative approach does not replace conventional medical care—it complements it by addressing the whole person.


Can Stress Cause Graves' Disease?

This is one of the most common questions I hear.

Stress alone does not cause Graves' disease. However, chronic physical or emotional stress may contribute to immune dysregulation in genetically susceptible individuals and can worsen symptoms or trigger disease onset in some patients.

This is why managing stress, prioritizing restorative sleep, maintaining healthy nutrition, and supporting overall wellness are important components of long-term care.
