TREATING TYPE 1 & TYPE 2 DIABETES
Approximately 29.1 million people in the United States have diabetes, and another 1 million people remain undiagnosed. While the rate of newly-diagnosed cases continues to rise, there are treatments that can help improve the health and overall quality of life for those with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

At the Metabolic Center for Wellness, we take a medically-sound, individualized approach to diabetes care.

Type 1 Diabetes
Typically diagnosed during childhood, type 1 diabetes was previously referred to as “juvenile diabetes.” While only 5 percent of the population has this form of the disease, it is a significant health concern because the body doesn’t produce insulin, the hormone needed to convert sugar, starches and other foods into the energy needed to sustain life. However, there are many treatments that help those with type 1 live long, healthy lives.

When selecting the best course of action, the goal is to always to maximize health benefits, while minimizing disruption to daily life. For that reason, Dr. Mazza utilizes the latest technologies for her patients. For example, there is an implantable device for continuous glucose monitoring that allows patients to fine-tune blood sugar levels without the pain and inconvenience of traditional finger sticks. She also works with a number of diabetes equipment manufacturers who rely on her for product feedback, as well as offer enrollment in clinical trials for hard-to-regulate cases.

Type 2 Diabetes
There are so many causes of type 2 diabetes, from high-sugar diets and sedentary lifestyles to genetics and competing health conditions. However, there is a single commonality…no single pill will completely control this condition. It requires a multifaceted approach.

After fully evaluating your health condition, the Metabolic Center for Wellness team will help you develop an attainable wellness plan to meet your goals. For most of our patients, that means making the types of lifestyle modifications, like losing weight, that allow you to reduce, and in some cases, eliminate medications altogether. But the process isn’t always easy, so we have the tools to help.

Since weight distribution, especially belly fat, affects an individual’s insulin resistance, Dr. Mazza uses a state-of-the-art body fat analyzer. This provides an accurate benchmark, as well as allows patients to monitor their progress along the way. Since this technology is far more advanced than a traditional bathroom or doctor’s office scale, the rate of compliance goes up because people have an accurate measure of even small changes in the right direction.
